今天，气候变迁的挑战已经凌驾于所有问题之上。最近的研究发现，截至二十一世纪末，全球有百分之三十九的人口将面临过去任何生物都从未经历过的处境。过去已经有几部优秀的纪录片说明了地球环境的巨变，并指出人类活动对地球的长期影响。《人类世:荣耀与毁灭》的独特之处，在于强调导致这种局面发生的过程，而不是单纯的陈述。人类在各个领域的进步过程，塑造出成就非凡的工业化时代，而且多半为大家所乐见。然而，我们在课堂上学到的这两百年历史却充满了偏颇思维，现在应该去思考进步背后的历史，并了解我们所认为的进步过程。══导演的话══有一种声音驱使我们回顾那伟大的「曾几何时」；有一种声音贯穿了整部纪录片。我故意不在片中发表任何评论。那声音不是在评论画面或历史；恰恰相反，它在倾诉历史。我使用了各国数据来回顾战争、福特主义、边缘都市化或政治演说。我使用《美国生活方式》（Americanwayoflife）的宣传档案，呈现反共的美国如何宣扬资本主义和消费主义的优点。我同时也使用业余影片，这些影片是社会学文献，是集体想象的一部分。这些影像的作者不详，内容谈论着我们和几个世代之前的人们。最后，我使用二十世纪上半叶的电影画面。这些片段帮助我呈现画面甚少、或是没有图像的时代（煤炭工业、十九世纪的采矿工作）。档案画面的作用不在阐释，而是呈现各个不同时期。观众将随之回溯过去的点滴，欣赏其美学、氛围、声音、音乐和演说。除了这些档案数据，我还拍摄了一些现代世界的画面，帮助观众更贴近这个故事。这些画面呈现在七十亿芸芸众生中，默默无名工作的人们。亚利桑纳州因核废料而「永久消失」的地区、中国的煤矿工人、贸易港口及一个极为现代化却渺无人烟的数据中心等等。他们提醒了观众在影片中的大哉问：我们如何走到今天这个地步？
